The following exercise is a fun yet educational way to work on learning different emotions.  Pick a movie that is of interest to your child.  Even a movie like Shrek is good.  My son studies Taekwondo, so we watched Karate Kid.

Video Watching

Watch a movie with your child.  Stop the show on at least five occasions and ask your child how a person feels in the scene.  Your child should write or tell you about the emotion(s) that the person is experiencing.  This exercise is intended to help your child who currently doesn't understand these concepts therefore you will need to help them.  Adding an analogy from his/her own life is very useful.

Example: Karate Kid

Q:  When Daniel fist saw Ali how was he feeling?
A:  He's getting in love.

Q:  How was Daniel feeling when the boys were fighting with him? (at the beach)
A:  Angry, mad, confused and hurt.

Q:  When Daniel was putting the hose into the stall where Johnny was , how did Daniel feel?
A:  happy, determined to get back at him, and hysterical.

Q:  How did Daniel feel when he was picking Ali up for a date?
A:  Anxious

Q:  How was Mr. Miaggi feeling the night he celebrated his Anniversary?
A:  Sad, hurt (as in hurt heart) and lonely.

Q:  When Daniel won the tournament how did he feel?
A:  Happy and victorious.  (this was an opportunity for me to introduce a new word and discuss the meaning using an analogy.)
