All
children have behaviors that we would like to "work on"
. Not only bad behaviors, but good ones
too.
The
Behavior Chart is a visual reward system similar
to "sticker charts". This chart also focuses only
on good behaviors.
The
Behavior Chart lists each behavior and it's consequence (the
reward). The chart can list one to many behaviors.
With younger children, it's best to minimize the number
listed. One to three is best. Again the number should
be based on what your child can handle.
Because
it is important to let your child make decisions, the reward
system is something that is agreed upon with you and your
child.
The
example chart uses money. The child has an "intense
focus" with money so we assigned 10 cents per point.
Points are agreed upon with you and your child. This gives
an opportunity to learn negotiation skills!
This
chart also includes spaces for each day of the week. Why
only one week? Another important issue is when the reward is
given, immediate rewards are best. This allows the child to
understand their actions really do have a consequence!
Points are tallied by the day so they can see their progress.
Spaces are provided for total and cumulative points.
Finally,
the chart has space for an "agreement to the
contract". You and your child sign off on the points
and reward given. The example uses money. Another
example would be to assign a range of points with the reward being
different depending on the number of points accumulated throughout
the week. Example: 10 - 20 points = an ice cream cone
21-30 points = a new toy (w/ $ limit) 31-40 points = going to the
movies.
Kids
like to be rewarded for doing good things. AS children are
very "visual" and often have a difficult time with
verbal instructions, this is why often use visual aids such as the
behavior or sticker charts. Listing the behavior is also a
visual reminder of what they should be working on. Post it
wherever it is seen best (eye level is great) and good luck!!
